Mark 6

“Familiarity Isn’t Faith”

1. Knowing About Jesus Isn’t the Same as Trusting Him

📖 Read: Mark 6:1–6

Jesus returns to Nazareth — His hometown. The people are amazed at His teaching and miracles, yet they question Him: “Isn’t this the carpenter?” And they take offense at Him.

They were familiar with Jesus. They grew up with Him. But familiarity did not produce faith. Verse 6 says Jesus “marveled because of their unbelief.”

Key Insight:
👀 Familiarity with Jesus can dull our faith if it doesn’t lead to trust.

Discussion Questions:

How can growing up around church make someone familiar with Jesus but not surrendered to Him?

Where might comfort or routine be replacing real faith in your life?

2. Unbelief Limits What We Experience

📖 Read: Mark 6:4–6

Jesus’ power wasn’t weak — but Nazareth’s unbelief limited what they experienced. He healed a few, but the fullness of what could have happened wasn’t realized.

Unbelief doesn’t diminish who Jesus is. It diminishes what we receive.

Key Insight:
🚪 The power of God is experienced where faith is welcomed.

Discussion Questions:

What are subtle ways unbelief shows up in our lives?

How might fear of what others think keep us from bold faith?

3. Faith Steps Out, Even When It’s Uncomfortable

📖 Read: Mark 6:7–13

After Nazareth, Jesus sends the disciples out two by two. He gives them authority — but tells them to take no extra provision. No bread. No money. No backup plan.

This is faith in action: trusting God’s power and provision. They go, preach repentance, heal the sick, and cast out demons.

Key Insight:
👣 Faith moves forward trusting Jesus, not personal security.

Discussion Questions:

What “security blankets” do we cling to instead of trusting God?

Where might Jesus be asking you to step out in faith right now?

4. Compassion Flows from a Shepherd’s Heart

📖 Read: Mark 6:34–44

The disciples are exhausted, but the crowds follow. Jesus sees them as “sheep without a shepherd” and has compassion.

With five loaves and two fish, He feeds five thousand. What seems insufficient in human hands becomes more than enough in His.

This miracle echoes Psalm 23 — green grass, a Shepherd, provision. Jesus reveals Himself as the true Shepherd and the Bread of Life.

Key Insight:
🍞 When we place what little we have in Jesus’ hands, He multiplies it.

Discussion Questions:

Why do the disciples default to scarcity instead of trust?

What “five loaves and two fish” might Jesus be asking you to offer Him?

5. Hearts Can Harden Quickly

📖 Read: Mark 6:45–52

After witnessing the feeding of the five thousand, the disciples panic in a storm. Jesus walks on water and says, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

Yet verse 52 says their hearts were hardened.

Even after miracles, it’s possible to drift back into fear and forgetfulness.

Key Insight:
💔 Proximity to Jesus does not guarantee a soft heart toward Jesus.

Discussion Questions:

How can we go from faith-filled moments back to fear so quickly?

What practices help keep your heart soft and responsive to God?

🙏 Prayer Prompts

Awareness: “Lord, show me where I’ve grown familiar but not faithful.”

Boldness: “Help me trust You publicly, not just privately.”

Provision: “Teach me to rely on You instead of my own security.”

Softness: “Guard my heart from hardness and unbelief.”

Presence: “Help me treasure who You are and walk closely with You daily.”
