Philippians 1:1-2

“New Master, New Name, New Power”

1. A New Master, A True Freedom

📖 Read: Philippians 1:1a

Paul calls himself a servant—literally a slave—of Christ Jesus. In a world where slavery meant loss, Paul embraces it because of who his Master is. Jesus is the Master who gave His life in love.

Everyone is mastered by something—success, approval, comfort—but only Jesus brings freedom. What feels like surrender is actually life.

Key Insight:
🔥 True freedom is found in surrender to Jesus, not self-rule.

Discussion Questions:

  • What “masters” compete for control in your life?

  • How have they disappointed or enslaved you?

  • What would deeper surrender to Jesus look like this week?

2. A New Identity: From Sinner to Saint

📖 Read: Philippians 1:1b

Paul calls ordinary believers saints—set apart for God. This isn’t earned; it’s given in Christ. The gospel doesn’t just forgive you—it renames you.

Even Paul, once a persecutor, became a saint. You are no longer defined by sin but by Christ.

Key Insight:
✝️ You don’t fight for identity—you fight from identity.

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you see yourself as a sinner trying harder or a saint becoming who God says you are?

  • How does your identity change the way you fight sin?

  • Where do you need to live in alignment with that identity?

3. A New Source: Grace and Peace

📖 Read: Philippians 1:2

Grace empowers; peace anchors. These are daily realities flowing from relationship with Jesus. There is no lasting peace or sustaining grace apart from Him.

To be “in Christ” means His life is actively at work in you.

Key Insight:
🌊 The Christian life is sustained by receiving, not striving.

Discussion Questions:

  • Where do you need more grace right now?

  • What is robbing your peace?

  • How can you grow in dependence on Christ daily?

4. A New Citizenship, A New Allegiance

📖 Read: Philippians 3:20

Philippi prized Roman identity, but Paul points to a higher one: citizenship in heaven. Disciples live on earth but belong to another Kingdom.

The early church reflected this—diverse people united by the gospel, not status.

Key Insight:
🌍 Your primary identity shapes your daily priorities.

Discussion Questions:

  • Where do you feel tension between culture and Kingdom?

  • How does your heavenly citizenship shape your priorities?

  • How can you help build gospel-centered community across differences?

5. A New Invitation: Peace with God

📖 Read: Ephesians 1:18

Before anything else, we need peace with God. This comes through surrender—giving Jesus ownership of your life.

He offers comfort, clarity, forgiveness, confidence, and hope. You are not far from God—you are one surrendered heart away.

Key Insight:
❤️ Peace with God is the foundation for every other kind of peace.

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you have peace with God?

  • What is holding you back from full surrender?

  • What step can you take today toward deeper commitment?

Prayer Prompts

Examination: “Lord, reveal the false masters I’m serving.”

Worship: “Jesus, You alone are worthy to lead my life.”

Transformation: “Holy Spirit, help me live as a saint.”

Surrender: “Lord, I give You full ownership of my life—lead me in grace and peace.”
