Mark 9-10

“Marks of a True Disciple, Part Two”

1. The Argument Reveals Our Hearts

📖 Read: Mark 9:33–34

The disciples argue about who is the greatest. Even Jesus’ closest followers were preoccupied with status, recognition, and influence. Our desire to matter can subtly shape our priorities.

Key Insight:
🎯 True discipleship challenges our instinct for recognition and self-promotion.

Discussion Questions:

  • In what ways do you secretly measure your worth by visibility or influence?

  • How do social media and culture feed the desire to be “noticed”?

  • Where in your life are you tempted to compete for status instead of serving?

2. Redefining Greatness: The Virtue of Being Last

📖 Read: Mark 9:35

Jesus teaches, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” God calls His followers to humility, not climbing the ladder of worldly success.

Key Insight:
🧠 Humility is the pathway to true greatness.

Discussion Questions:

  • How does Scripture redefine what it means to be “great”? (Micah 6:8; Luke 14:11; Ephesians 4:1-2; Colossians 3:12; James 4:6; Isaiah 66:2)

  • Where in your life do you need to step down to serve rather than step up to be seen?

  • What practical steps can you take to cultivate humility this week?

3. Receiving the Least

📖 Read: Mark 9:36–37

Jesus places a child in the center, highlighting vulnerability, dependence, and worth not tied to status. Receiving and serving those with nothing to offer is receiving Christ Himself.

Key Insight:
Kingdom greatness is measured by how we welcome and serve the least.

Discussion Questions:

  • Who are the “least” in your world that God is calling you to serve?

  • How can we cultivate a posture of openness and receptivity to others?

  • How does serving others transform our perspective on leadership and influence?

4. Servanthood Is True Greatness

📖 Read: Mark 10:42–45

Jesus contrasts worldly authority with kingdom leadership: greatness comes through service, sacrifice, and considering the needs of others. Even the Son of Man served and gave His life as a ransom.

Key Insight:
🔥 Serving others, especially when it costs us, is the mark of Christlike greatness.

Discussion Questions:

  • How does the world’s definition of leadership differ from God’s?

  • Where in your life are you tempted to lead for recognition instead of serving?

  • How can you intentionally serve others this week without seeking praise?

5. Following the Suffering Servant

📖 Read: Mark 9:30–32; 10:32–34

Jesus models the ultimate servant leadership, walking straight into suffering, humiliation, and death — all for the sake of others. His greatness is fully revealed in His obedience and love.

Key Insight:
✝️ True greatness involves embracing sacrifice, not avoiding it.

Discussion Questions:

  • What areas of sacrifice are you called to follow Jesus more fully?

  • How does Jesus’ example reshape your understanding of leadership and service?

  • How can your life reflect the posture of the Suffering Servant in everyday choices?

Prayer Prompts

  • Humility: “Teach me to value others above myself.”

  • Service: “Show me who I can serve quietly this week.”

  • Obedience: “Help me follow You even when it costs me.”

  • Posture: “Align my heart with Your kingdom priorities.”
