Mark 13

“Marks of a True Disciple, Part Four”

1. Ready for the Return of Christ

📖 Read: Mark 13:1–6

In life—our jobs, families, schedules—what truly matters? Jesus calls us to live ready for His return, the ultimate event that overshadows all our plans. His coming will be personal, visible, and unmistakable. Every eye will see Him, and every heart will know His glory.

Key Insight:
🎯 Everything else fades in comparison to living prepared for Christ’s return.

Discussion Questions:

  • What distractions or priorities compete for your attention more than readiness for Christ?

  • How does knowing Jesus is coming back shape your daily decisions?

  • What would it look like to live every day in light of His coming kingdom?

2. Signs of the Last Days

📖 Read: Mark 13:7–13

Jesus warns of false messiahs, wars, earthquakes, famines, and rising persecution. These events are described as the “beginning of birth pains,” signaling that history is moving toward God’s ultimate plan. Believers will face trials, betrayal, and even death, yet He promises: “the one who endures to the end will be saved.”

Key Insight:
🔥 Faithfulness amid hardship is a hallmark of true discipleship.

Reflective Question:

  • How does the reality of global unrest and persecution motivate you to live faithfully today?

3. Stay Alert and Faithful

📖 Read: Mark 13:14; 32–37

Jesus speaks of the “abomination of desolation” and the uncertainty of the exact time of His return. The key is to remain awake and faithful, carrying out the responsibilities God has entrusted to us. Obsessing over dates can distract from true obedience, but vigilant living keeps our hearts aligned with His Kingdom purposes.

Key Insight:
✝️ God values faithful living over prediction—obedience today matters more than knowing the schedule.

Discussion Questions:

  • What areas of life are you tempted to live “asleep” in, ignoring God’s calling?

  • How can daily obedience keep your heart alert for His return?

  • In what ways can you encourage others to stay watchful?

4. Living with Hope and Purpose

📖 Read: Mark 13:24–27; Acts 1:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17

Christ will return with power and glory. Angels will gather His elect, judgment will be complete, and His Kingdom established. This hope shapes how we give, pray, steward our gifts, lead others, and live with eternity in view.

Key Insight:
🌍 Hope in Christ’s return transforms daily life and motivates kingdom-focused living.

Discussion Questions:

  • How does hope in Christ’s return shape your priorities?

  • Which of these five themes do you feel most called to practice today?

    1. Give generously and love without expectation

    2. Pray and seek God alone

    3. Faithfully use what God entrusted to you

    4. Lead and shepherd others to Christ

    5. Live for eternity, not for this world

  • Where is God asking you to live more fully for His Kingdom now?

5. Gospel Urgency

📖 Read: Revelation 22:12–13; Psalm 139:7–12

God seeks the lost and desires that none should perish. Living watchfully includes sharing the gospel with urgency, pointing others to salvation, and embodying hope and joy in Christ, even amidst a broken world.

Key Insight:
✝️ Our lives reflect God’s heart when we live faithfully and share the gospel urgently.

Discussion Questions:

  • How does the reality of Jesus’ coming affect your sharing of the gospel?

  • Who in your circle needs to hear about the hope of Christ today?

  • How can you cultivate compassion and urgency without fear or despair?
