VISION FOR THIS DISCUSSION

Adam and Eve are enjoying everything God has given them. They are truly in paradise—there is no sin, no separation, no distance from God. Just man, woman, and God in friendship and partnership to cover and govern the earth with His glorious beauty.

But enter a new character in the scene. A serpent, the shrewdest and craftiest created begins a conversation with Eve that will change the trajectory of God’s original glorious design for mankind. The serpent will exaggerate, lie, and convince mankind that all that God has given them is still not enough. Discontentment will enter into the story, and thus enter into our story, and into our very hearts—marring everything good God gave us in the beginning.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PASSAGE

  1. Have someone in your group read Genesis 3:1-5 aloud. What are some initial observations that caught your attention in these verses?

  2. Read Revelation 12:9. Based on this and the story of the Bible, we can conclude that the serpent in Genesis is indeed the same serpent we see in Revelation. From the beginning to the end, what can we observe about the character, schemes, and purpose of this created being?

  3. Read verse 5. What do you think it means to become like God in “knowing both good and evil”? What makes something “good”? What makes something “evil”? (use Bible verses to give examples of where we see this)

  4. What seems to be the reason(s) Eve is convinced by the serpent to eat the forbidden fruit? What does this say about the human heart? What does this say about our need for redemption?

    QUESTIONS FOR APPLICATION

  1. Head—How do Eve and the Serpent alter God’s command? What does Eve say? What does the Serpent say? What does God actually say?

  2. Heart—Why do we seem attracted to sin more than God’s commands? Why do we seem to enjoy sin? Why do we actually enjoy God more?

  3. Hands—What sins are we currently being attracted to? What does God promise is better for us to enjoy? (Use specific Bible verses) How can we learn to consistently enjoy choosing God’s promises over sin’s promises?

PRAYER

PRAY ‘TACOS’ after collecting prayer requests

Thanksgiving - “Father, thank you…”

Adoration - “Father, you are…”

Confession - “Father, I confess…”

Others - “Father, I pray for…”

Self - “Father, please help me…”

*If size or group dynamics seem to hinder prayer, consider dividing into groups of men/women or groups of 3-4 to reduce barriers to praying out loud
